vintage button bifolds

At STRUCTUREbags, I love integrating beautiful pieces in our work. From upcycled fabrics to colorful organic prints, bringing unique, high quality components to you keeps it interesting for me!

This week I highlight our vintage buttons and the woman who helps bring them to our organic canvas bifolds. Beth Scheidemantel has collected buttons for more than 30 years. She now sells them at her etsy shop, pillowtalkswf.

Q: How long have you been collecting buttons and when and why did you start selling them?
A: I worked in a buying office from the 1970s through the 1980s and a suit vendor knew I did crafts, so sent me 10 pounds of buttons. I used them over the years for various craft projects. I started selling them about two years ago. These were the first buttons I sold.

Vintage ButtonsQ: What are some of your favorite finds?
A: Civil war military buttons and a Chanel button I found in random estate sale lot.

Q: What are some of your favorite ways to see your vintage buttons used?
A: Button bouquets, I think. I just made my daughter's wedding bouquet, made of mother of pearl and vintage rhinestones.

Q: What button material do you love and why?
A: I love the 1930-1940s buttons I have in my Cottage Chic collections. I love color. Some refer to them as “house coat” buttons. These buttons remind me of my grandma who was an expert seamstress.

Q: What advice would you give to an aspiring collector?
A: Buy what you love.

Q: Any final thoughts?
A: I love buying and selling buttons. Sometimes deciding what I will keep verses sell is difficult, but selling allows me to look for great new finds.

organic canvas bifold with vintage buttonI was thrilled when I found Beth's shop more than a year ago. Her collections vary from rhinestone-encrusted buttons to quirky shapes and sizes and they are truly a treat to browse. I sometimes get lost in my shopping!

Using vintage, upcycled buttons gives each of our bifolds a unique story – one that I enjoy creating each and every time.
