Our move back to the Central Coast brought with it a special treat: wine country. And what a surprise to learn there are a number of wineries in the region going green!

Calling themselves "SIP" certified, these wineries go beyond organic. They practice water and energy conservation, have gentler rodent and pest management, use natural weed control (sometimes goat grazing!) and more.

Here are a few wines we can certify ourselves as delicious:

  1. Baileyana Winery produces a number of terrific "SIP Certified" wines. One of our favorites is their Firepeak Pinot Noir ($30) - medium-bodied and easy to sip. Visit their school house tasting room and enjoy the beautiful views. (Personal note: we are proud wine club members here and love all their wines!)
  2. Edna Valley Vineyards is a fast-growing winery located just minutes from our home. We've enjoyed their white wines often on sunny Central Coast afternoons. Their Fluer de Edna Chardonnay ($27) is "SIP Certified."
  3. Tolosa Winery is making sustainable a big part of its brand - they've even gone solar. And with great wines, too!. We love their No Oak Chardonnay ($21). Bonus - also right around the corner from our house...
  4. Trader Joes again? YES! Keep an eye out at your local Trader Joes for some fabulous wines grown using SIP Certified grapes!
  5. Tangent. Anything Tangent. This white wine label is a sub-set of the Baileyana brand and we fell in love with their original Ecclestone wine nearly a decade ago. Sadly, they stopped producing this wonderful, drinkable blend, but their current varieties are awesome and well-priced. Choose from Viognier ($17), Pinot Gris ($17), Sauvignon Blanc ($13), Albariño ($17), or Grenache Blanc ($17). Tip: Take a peek at Costco for some excellent deals on these! And, STRUCTUREbags loves the name, of course!

Next time you are at the wine shop, local grocer or even Costco, take some time to find not just one - but two - of these great wines. Then wrap one in a fun burlap wine bag or camo tote, open the second and invite some friends over. You can decide later if the wrapped gift will stay with you, get opened or go home with your friends! Enjoy!
